MADAME.

It was her birthday you see and I’d made her a lovely dress and we’d had lots of fittings and really in a way it was like old times because she didn’t say anything nasty while we were doing the dress. It was blue, not dark blue and not pale blue either, a nice clear blue that she’s always liked since she was a little girl and it’s a colour that seems absolutely Françoise to me. She was being so good really we thought we might have some very old friends to see us, who knew about our trouble and were terribly concerned for us. Françoise hadn’t got out for two days and things weren’t going too badly except for the wicked things she would suddenly shout out about her daddy when she didn’t know what she was saying, and she wasn’t quite all she should be about using the toilet I’m ashamed to say but we won’t say anything about that. So I got Françoise all dressed and did her hair prettily, I’d washed it the night before, and tied it back with a piece of ribbon the very shade of the dress, I had quite a search to find it but important things are worth a bit of effort, and then I went downstairs to greet our friends. My husband was home early, we all sat down, it was so delightful for a short time. I called Françoise.
